MT-I — known in the literature as afamelanotide — is a linear thirteen-amino-acid analogue of alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone, the peptide that tells pigment cells to make melanin. Two substitutions (norleucine at position 4, D-phenylalanine at 7) make it far more potent and far longer-lived than the natural hormone it mimics.
It keeps α-MSH's linear architecture and its preference for the MC1 receptor — the melanocortin receptor on melanocytes that governs pigmentation — which makes it the cleaner, more targeted of our two melanocortins.
MT-I is the standard probe for MC1R biology: receptor-activation assays, melanocyte-culture studies of eumelanin synthesis, and pigmentation-biology work generally. Because MC1R activation shifts melanocytes toward producing photoprotective eumelanin, a parallel literature studies it in the context of photoprotection and UV response.
Its receptor selectivity is what separates it from MT-II: when a study needs to know MC1R specifically did the work, the linear, MC1R-focused analogue is the tool.
Verified at 98.9%+ purity with confirmed identity and endotoxin screening, supplied lyophilized. The D-amino-acid substitution that extends its life in biological preparations doesn't exempt it from standard handling: −20 °C as powder, cold and prompt in solution.

Two amino-acid substitutions — norleucine for methionine at position 4 and D-phenylalanine for L-phenylalanine at 7 — that protect it from enzymatic degradation and raise receptor potency. Functionally it behaves as a stabilized, amplified α-MSH.
Selectivity versus breadth. MT-I is linear and MC1R-focused, so effects can be pinned to that receptor. MT-II is cyclic and activates several melanocortin receptor subtypes at once, making it a screening tool. Which one a lab wants depends on whether the question is 'this receptor' or 'this family'.
