Ipamorelin is a five-amino-acid synthetic peptide that triggers growth-hormone release by activating the ghrelin receptor (GHS-R1a) in the pituitary — the same receptor the stomach hormone ghrelin uses. It belongs to the growth-hormone-secretagogue family, but it earned its place in the literature by what it doesn't do.
Earlier secretagogues in its class also provoke cortisol, ACTH and prolactin release and stimulate appetite. Ipamorelin, in the original characterization work, produced a GH pulse with almost none of that collateral signalling — which is why it was described from the start as the first truly selective GH secretagogue.
That selectivity is the whole research story. When a study needs a clean growth-hormone pulse in a model — pituitary cell culture, pulsatility work in rodents, GH-axis pharmacology — ipamorelin delivers the signal without the hormonal noise older compounds drag along, so the downstream effects can be attributed to GH rather than cortisol or appetite pathways.
It's also a standard tool on the secretagogue side of GHRH-versus-GHS comparison designs: the pituitary can be pushed from two different receptors, and pairing ipamorelin with a GHRH analogue like sermorelin or CJC-1295 lets a lab study each input separately and together.

Different receptor entirely. GHRH analogues act on the GHRH receptor; ipamorelin acts on the ghrelin receptor (GHS-R1a). Both converge on GH release from the pituitary, which is why comparison and combination designs pair one of each.
In characterization studies it stimulated GH release without meaningful ACTH, cortisol or prolactin elevation — the side-signalling older secretagogues like GHRP-6 produce. For research, that means a cleaner attribution of downstream effects to GH itself.
